Thais are known for the variety of their desserts. But do you know they learned desserts-making only from a fereigner?

Foreign gourmets are amazed at the awesome variety of Thai desserts. Yet, such sweet tradition wasn’t really part of the county’s ancient culture.

The making of Thai desserts began only durig the reign of King Narai (1657 – 1688 A.D.) of Ayutthaya when a Portuguese lady, Cahterine de Torgueymar, was hired confectionary chef in the royal court. Under her tutelage, the ladies in the royal court learned how to make desserts using eggs and wheat flour. Here are just some of the popular Thai sweets you’ll find in Thailand now.
